Limited screen resolution in Ubuntu 8.10


I am a first time user of any kind of Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an old Dell Latitude C600. I want to set resolution at 1027x768 but it ony goes to 800x600. I know nothing, so any solutions must spelled out completely. Thanks for any help you can give. I did go to similar threads, but they didn't explain in detail enough. Thanks for any help you can give.

Do you know if your laptop can support that resolution?

Yes, it supported that resolution in Win XP. The video card is an ATi Rage Mobility 128 AGP 2X.
