Lilo error after Norton ghost disk image restore

Hi ,

help required for newbie :)

Just after recovering a hard drive from a norton ghost image, but the system fails to boot. I get the following screen ;
LILO for a second or two then I get a repeating message “error 0x01“ running up the screen.

The pc is used for controlling cnc knife system.
I’ve used knoppix cd to browse file on the recovered disk, all the files do seem to be recovered and visible as far as I can make out.

The distro is “Lectra Linux v2.2p8“ (taken from /etc/issue)

(please also note to run the Knoppix cd I placed the recovered drive into core2quad system which was fit to run it! , the pc failing to boot is a P3 with 64mb ram !)

I’d love to have the install disks or a rescue boot disk , but I don’t :(

Is there any way of repairing this system without original install/boot disks ?

could ghost have recovered the boot file to a different drive address / location ?
and if so, can they be moved to the correct disk/sector location?

attaching /etc/lilo.conf (its an old system with ide drives )
# LILO configuration file
#
# LILO global section
#
boot = /dev/sda1
delay = 30
vga = normal
ramdisk = 0
install = /etc/lilo/boot.b
#
# linux bootable partition
#
image = /zImage
root = /dev/sda1
label = linux
read-only

thanks Ja

i take it this was installed using two 3.5 or 5.25 inch floppy's

Norton ghost might not have saved / restored in a `80's to `90's disk format

have you contacted the manufacture ?
http://www.lectracom.com/

this is one OLD system

I’ve no idea !
but I’d say your guess is correct, have one of them 3.5 floppy’s and cd-rom as well ;)

We have to use the old p3 system which attached to the knife cutter. That system has an ISA card which communicates with the cnc cutter . This card also has the License hardwired into it for the coms software ! hence the old PC !

problem is the machine was bought as is with no instruction or recovery disks !
I made the ghost image before I started meddling with the settings; wish I knew ghost was known to cause this problem before I started :( :redface:

Any idea of how to find out which linux distro lectra changed to make there version on this old pc ?

just looking about , the /etc/lilo/boot.b file was last changed in 05/23/1996 if it helps !

thanks

i would only be guessing as to the base OS

but from 1996 there were not many and from some googling it looked like they "rolled there own"

with the not booting
that might be anything from dieing hardware to ghost not saving the file permissions or the boot sector

contact the manufacture

but reinstalling lilo might work

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...r-0x01-236128/

also for OLD computers there would NOT!!! be a sd in the lilo boot for the partition it would be the OLD format using HD
Code:

    # LILO configuration file
    #
    # LILO global section
    #
    boot = /dev/hda1
    delay = 30
    vga = normal
    ramdisk = 0
    install = /etc/lilo/boot.b
    #
    # linux bootable partition
    #
    image = /zImage
    root = /dev/hda1
    label = linux
    read-only

John,

fair play, reinstalled the lilo and I've the system booting again ! :hattip:

I followed the following procedure, might help somebody else if they have no rescue disk !

http://linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/LILO-cra...e-HOWTO-1.html

I also got tomsrtbt floppy from http://www.toms.net/rb just what was need on such an old system.

Cheers
