I spent 10 mins Writing a post.. and this site ..logged me off and I lost it... ANYWAY
make a long story short
I have and 80 GB ide hdd with Win 2k on it and a 9 gb SCSI that i tried to install Mandrake Linux 9.2
During the install , it froze...a few times...
Frustrated I gave up for the night....
I tried to load up my Win2k.. and I got an LILO check sum error with many numbers... but I DID NOT install or change ANYTHING on the 80gb, I only altered the 9gb
...
Now my OS won't load(2000)
HELP
boot with a dos bootdisk and fdisk /mbr, or boot with win2k cd then do a automatic repair(just choose to inspect startup environment), or fixmbr in recovery console.
Make sure the bios is set to boot IDE drive first, make sure the win2k partition (or the first primary fat32/ntfs partition) is set to active, go to the reocovery console the do fixmbr and fixboot.
Not exactly sure but either lilo is still left in the mbr, or you installed it in the boot sector of the win2k system partition, or maybe the bios is left on booting scsi first.
Ok now you make me want to tell the whole story again heheh
I am very interested in Linux... So I DL Mandrake 9.2(iso)
I have 3 HDD's on my system, 2 scsi and one ide...
I disconnected one of the scsi leaving only the IDE and the other 9gb scsi...
The (80gb) IDE is where my Win2k is.
When I started installing Linux, I made 100% sure that I DID NOT format or install Linux on the 80 gb ...
I did an AUTO ARRANGE on the 9gb hdd because I do not know how to partion or format Linux.
As I was installing it, It froze...
and kept freezeing
I became frustrated.... so I gave up (for the night)
As I tried to go on my 80 gb(Win 2k) it have me the LILO checksum error..
I disconnected the 9gb(The one Linux was installed on) and left ONLY the 80 gb hdd...LILO error...
So I went to the Win 2k CD and saw that it still saw an NTFS partition and it showed 30 gb free.( which tells me the DATA is still there)
I tried to do a repair(automatic) .. but that did not work
I installed Win 2k on the 9gb (that had linux)
so this way i can try to at least access the 80gb drive while in windows
and retrieve my data(thats my main concern)
When I installed it on the 9gb(scsi)...i restarted ... and for some reason it keeps trying to boot from the 80(ide) gb ...(check sum error again)
I went to the BIOS..and it is in fact set to boot from SCSI first...
weird...
Only thing I have not tried is the Recovery console.
Again.. how could that have happened?
I installed it (Linux) on the 9gb.... but the 80gb is having the checksum error...??
