Like to try insalling new kernal

I have the kernal 2.6.9-5.3EL. I like to try installing a new kernal to check how to do it wihout messing up the exsisting one. How?

Perform the steps for compiling a new kernEl, if your old kernel is vmlinuz, just name new one vmlinuz.New or something. Add a new entry in lilo or grub and just have it point to the fresh kernel instead of old, update boot loader then you are done.

where to find kernal rpm?

Where can I find rpm to install kernals. I down loaded some file. when I exract it files went to /root/linux- folder. I don know wha I should do after that.
