lightest linux on USB for Virtual Box

hi everyone,

here is what i intend to do, i want to create a virtual machine, have this image on my usb flash disc so that i always have my virtual linux pc with me, (where i have virtual box)

my questions is, i want to use Ubuntu because of its huge repository support but with gnome or kde it is too big.

what can you offer for this case?
can i install ubuntu, remove everything that belongs to gnome and install lxde instead of it?

Slightly lighter, there is Xubuntu, but Xfce is starting to get large, these days.
