librpm-4.2.so what to do with it
 

I downloaded and tried to install apt (Advanced Package Tool) so I can download and update packages needed to run certain applications. It turned out that apt required three other packages itself to be installed. It asked for librpm-4.2.so, librpmdb-4.2.so, and librpmio-4.2.so.
I downloaded these files, but I don't know what to do next so I can get apt installed and running. I apreciate a detailed steps of what to do. thanks

Which Distribution are you running?

I am using AMD 3.2 GHZ, 128 MB RAM,VIA Technologies Sound & Video card, Linux FC3.
while at it, i have another problem now, the sound became very low all of the sudden and changing the setting in the volume control doesn't make any difference.

The apt software makes programs installation and updating very simple, but it doesn't run on Fedora. I found a very helpful thread on "linux general forum" of how to install a program. I am now trying to figure out an easy way to uninstall an application or software and i would be thanful to anyone that can post some information or refere to a certain documents

"APT, but it doesn't run on Fedora?", surely APT works fine with Fendora Core 3 or with all Fedora Core's I ever used, that is all.

Your config looks good to run Fedora, but to get any good performance you maybe want to upgrade to 256MB or bigger

thanks, may be i read old documents. can you tell me about those librpm depenencies files for apt? and how to install them. i will also try to download other versions of apt.

i downloaded apt-0.5.15.....i386 and i tried to install it and i got the following message:
rpm -i apt-devel-0.5.15cnc6-4.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:

it looks like the file dependency is the file itself although the site list the file as for FC3.
i would like to know if Dummy_in_linux or any body else ran through a simillar problem. thanks

On the website, which URL I posted before is also the line

"The packages are all signed with this GPG key."

You need to install this GPG key before you can install any of the RPM's from that website.

To install this GPG key you click on this link http://dag.wieers.com/packages/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt with your right mouse button and select "Save Link As"

If you have the text file saved you run rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt to install the key.

where even after listing the message still downloaded apt anyway . so i kept trying different versions. i installed the last one after i logged in as a root "su -m --login" instead of regular user or root in the root directory. now i am fine and thanks to your help and support.

please correct me if i am wrong about synaptic. synaptic is the gui for apt. it is a seperate pakage not included in apt

Yes Synaptic is the GUI for apt, and very useful. I can advice it.

i installed synaptic and it no doubts made or should make the world of package management much easier.
i exceute synaptic from the cl and i can use it fine, but i can't explain the error messages i got at the CL like

i got these messages on the cl each time i do something with a package (like checking for package dependency or just selecting the package) although synaptics works fine. do you know the source of these messages and how to turn it off because it seems meaningless. i lost track of a site that suggested a fix in the GPC-key file. thanks

I had Aapt installed on FC2 and it worked OK; however, since I hae upgraded to FC3, I hae DL the apt file as indicated, but it states that it requires 'Libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5.so.0' and when I try to DL that one and install, I keep getitng that this one needs 'ligbrpm-4.2.so', 'librpmdb-4.2.so', and librpmio-4.2.so', etc. A google search for these files indicates that they do not exist. Since I upgraded to FC3, the apt function refuses to start and trying to install the apt for FC3 seems to lacking clarity. Can anyone advicse me how to get my apt file up and going with FC3???
