libinklevel error

I am trying to get libinklevel working. The instructions were as followed.

tar xzf libinklevel-0.6.4.tar.gz
cd libinklevel
vi Makefile
make
make install

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing in vi Makefile but I run that, get out of it, then run make and make install. Make gives me the following error

gcc -Wall -O2 -fPIC -DPIC -I. -c -o linux.o linux.c
linux.c:11:22: ieee1284.h: No such file or directory
linux.c: In function `get_device_id':
linux.c:29: error: storage size of 'parports' isn't known
linux.c:52: warning: implicit declaration of function `ieee1284_find_ports'
linux.c:52: error: `E1284_OK' undeclared (first use in this function)
linux.c:52: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
linux.c:52: error: for each function it appears in.)
linux.c:54: warning: implicit declaration of function `ieee1284_get_deviceid'
linux.c:55: error: `F1284_FRESH' undeclared (first use in this function)
linux.c:29: warning: unused variable `parports'
make: *** [linux.o] Error 1

and make install gives me the same error. CAN SOMEONE HELP PLEASE. I've had this working before and now I'm getting frustrated (XP PRO crashed my system and I had to format)

you'll need the -devel package to have the headers ( the ieee1284.h file) on an rpm distro
