libcurl & curl-config problems

Hi again

I'm trying to install curlftpfs 0.8 in Ubuntu Dapper 6.06.

When running the configure command, I get the error message :

Code:

checking for curl-config... no
checking whether libcurl is usable... no

So it looks like the configure script can't find libcurl.

Checking in Synaptic Package Manager I see that libcurl3 version 7.15.1ubuntu2 is installed and according to http://curl.haxx.se, this is the latest release.

If I type :

Code:

sudo curl-config
at the command prompt, I'm told that the command can't be found.

Can anybody help me with this one please? I've just about exhausted all the sources of information I can find.

Many thanks in advance

Clive

Debian, and Ubuntu use a different system for tracking config info than "program-config" type files. Anything that needs a "-config program config file won't install in Ubuntu. But, you might try:

alien source.tar.gz
command not found
apt-get install alien

to make a .deb file out of it. Sometimes this works, and sometimes not.

Thanks AwesomeMachine for your reply.

In the end I found a good clue at http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/applications/curlftpfs which gives a very simple way of doing it - except that theis will work with versions of libcurl >= 7.15.2.

The highest level from Ubuntu is 7.15.1...

But Debian had the source for 7.15.3 - so now it works.

This really is a great system - If you need to work on remoted files regularly as I do (web development) I would certainly recommend Fuse and friends!

The good thing about all this is, of course, that each time I come up against a stumbling block I learn!

I like Linux now - I used to be a little scared of it...

:)
