LFS how long on my laptop?
Funny how the only Linux CD or DVD that works on this laptop is the LFS Live CD.
Its a brand new laptop. What can I say? My desire to get rid of Windows 7 and install linux has driven me to actually accept this as a solution. :-) Before I embark on this outrageous journey, how long do you think it would take to get a basic system up and running. That is the LFS part not the BLFS. Intel I5 quad core 2.67 Ghz stepped up to 3.2 Ghz per core CPU. 4 GB DDR3 RAM. I think the only major slowdown would be that I am going to be installing LFS on a 2 Terabyte USB HDD. At least it is USB Version 3 compatible. :-) |
Hi,
it all depends how skilled you are in compiling and installing programs from source. A base LFS system can be compiled within a day - if you know what you are doing. If this is your first LFS then consider it to be a matter of days. However, it seems odd that no distro would run on your laptop. When you burned the CD/DVD did you choose the slowest setting? I generally use the slowest to avoid errors. |
If you have the usb option try placing the distro on usb. I have found this to be quite tried and true method of late.

Its the newest laptop from HP. The linux distros work on my other computer but it is several years old. I have compiled a complete LFS distro a couple times before but It was on MUCH older hardware. Oh and yes I always burn a CD at the lowest settings with Linux distros. |

I have imaged the HP8540p at work with ubuntu 11.04 and no issues ... in fact it surprised my Manager how well it picked up all the hardware compared to Windows 7
Maybe you could let us know the model and it might help for the digging :) |
