Lets Start Off Simple
 

sup... i am Info. i am not what anyone would call a hacker so i would just like to start off simple. please use small words *lol* cause i am new to this. well lets see... i am currently at the library and i want to talk to a friend at another computer but i would like to know if there was a way that i could do it without using aim or some crap like that. is there a way that i can chat with her... these computers are lan.

well to start, not all linux users are hackers.
chances are the library admin would probly be against you being crafty on their computers. they are there for research. if it is a lan, you could walk over and talk to her/him.

i do know that not all LQs are hackers. i am also here for research. computer research. i know that the library is not a place to pull this kinda "crafty" move but i have asked for there opinion and they have informed me that this would not be a violation to the library. i only wish to know this info because i seek to understand more than i do. and well like you said... this is a library. talking out loud is not something the library likes very much. but this would give be the ability to talk without disterbing anyone else and get work and research done. i ment no harm in what i have asked and i apologise if i have caused it.

talk is an example (talk is a program name). You need to be logged to the same machine, however.

you could just use the online version of gaim which would require no installation of software. also dont bump the thread with another post for at least 24 horus. it can get annoying.

Could be dumb to ask but what are the OS's ? it could be that the windows messenger (not the program I'm talking on the service) isn't disable (lol) and you can use it to send msg's.

Well ok lets see... is there anyone that knows any computer tricks and or how they work.

The PC you're using is probably Windows. If so, the NET SEND command probably does what you want. A few problems though. This became yet another one of MS giant security holes and as such, has probably been disabled. Another problem is the syntax of the command requires that you know the user name of the user you want to send the message to. Since these are public machines, they may all be using the same login/user name. The message would not be private.

See if you can open a command prompt. Type NET SEND and see what happens.
