Laptop DVD drive has died, will linux boot from an external drive?

The second IDE channel on my laptop has died leaving me with no DVD combi drive. I'm using Mandrake 10.1 and I'm wanting to upgrade to a newer distro. Will linux boot from an external USB CDRW drive if I buy one? Failing that is it difficult to boot and Insatll from LAN?

The short answer is yes.

You will have to check your bios first to assure that it has the capability to boot from usb devices.

I believe FC3, SuSE and Debian can install by booting with boot floppys and then download the program packages from the mirror server.
