Unhappy laptop battery indicator absent ubuntu 12.04

Iam using the gnome classic interface in ubuntu 12.04 on a medion laptop.
The battery icon is not showing in the taskbar. when I switch to unity, it is displayed.
I have tried all the solutions I could find on the web with no luck. what stands out in the attempts is that when I go into system settings-power-show battery status-and alter the field to "when battery is present", when closing the setting is not saved and reverts to the blank field.
any clues?
