Kylix2/3_open - cannot install under Red Hat 8
 

After several attempts to instal Kylix2, I downloaded Kylix3 - still no success so I saved the file: kylix3_open.tar.gz on a CD and did a complete re-install of RH8 - it has a bootable hard disk to itself - the filing system is ext3.

Linux 2.4.18-14
KDE 3.03-8 Red Hat
Konqueror 3.03-13

1) Copied kylix3_open.tar.gz to: /root as it will not extract from the CD (supplementary question - why not?).

2) Used Extract here... which creates kylix3_open dir. in: /root and its contents.

3) Ran setup.sh by using Open with > Other... and ticking "run in terminal"
(supplementary question - why does this terminal close automatically whereas if I open a terminal by hand it stays open and I can scroll though the contents? also, is there a way to make a GNOME terminal stay open after the script has run?).

4) Accepted installation path [/user/local/kylix3].

5) Accepted symbolic links path [/user/local/bin].

6) Appears to install OK then starts producing lots of "cannot find file or directory errors".

7) Examining various directories, I find:
dir: / contains a few .xpm files
dir: /user/local/bin contains several 0byte files described as "Unknown (link)" pointing to (such as): /user/local/kylix3/bin/bc++
dir: /user/local/kylix3 (which has been created by setup.sh) contains several files including "Uninstall" but no sub-directories (such as): /user/local/kylix3/bin/bc++.

Searching for the missing files failed to find them. The size of the original file seems commensurate with a 100Mb+ installation as does the time spent installing; but the total size of all the files actually installed is only 100Kb+.

Kylix really seems to think that it has done a proper install despite the error messages and the fact that practically all the files have been "lost". I need to do an "uninstall" before I can try again.

Can anyone help please?

Another supplementary question. When I started using Linux I was using GNOME and had no problem closing down. I then changed to KDE and found that "shutdown" caused the computer to immediately power down the monitor and then hang. Trying GNOME again, I seemed to be getting a clean shutdown but it then displays, "Code: Bad EIP value" and hangs. What does this mean? What do I need to do to get a clean shutdown? Note my vintage K6-2 motherboard knows nothing about powering itself down.

I have found the answer to this elsewhere. I need to type:

sh setup.sh -m

This seems to work correctly and I see (in the terminal window) all the files being loaded. (Before it did not show the individual files being loaded.) Also the terminal window stayed open afterwards. Kylix is now installed in a correct-looking set of directories with no files added to: /

Unfortunately, as a Newbie, I have no idea why this worked. There seems to be several ways of opening a terminal window and running setup.sh - why does typing "sh" make a difference? Also, I have no idea what the "-m" means or even where to look for the information. There seems to be a huge amount of Linux information, but "-m" seems to be a very small needle to find in a field full of haystacks!

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, my problems with shutting down still remain.

there is also a program that does a pre-install test of your system libraries to make sure the program will run correctly. I think it is borpinstalltest or something like that.

I ran it on my system and it said everything was ok.

I dont think I can help you with this directly, but you might want to know that i posted a new thread today asking everyone's opinion on the best linux graphical user interface IDE for C++. Hopefully someone will be able to suggest a good relaiable program soon

1) You can't write to that CD which is why you can't do a tar -xzvf on a file on a CD:)

2) Try getting the newest files from borland.com, including the update and install those.
