KWiFiManager - How to get the "Scan For Networks" to work

When I click the "Scan for Networks" in the "Interface wlan0 - KWiFi Manager" box, it says no "networks have been found", and yet there are numerous networks where I am located. I wonder what I can do to make that work?

If you want a gui for network configuration, wicd is recommended.
It's available for Lenny via backports. Here's a link:

Follow the instructions link and it will show you how to add backports to your
apt sources.
