Question kubuntu8.08KDE4 internet connection via defined TCP/IP

hi. as i said before, this is my very first contact with linux.
i've downloaded Kubuntu8.04KDE4 and originally wanted to install it on my laptop. but i thought i'd install it to the desktop first just to see what's what.
it installed just fine. except i can't get it to connect to the internet.
my connection is ADSL via a lan router. in windows i've defined a tcp/ip to improve Torrent traffic trough open ports.
in linux, when i click on the network icon in the tray, it says ip adress is 0.0.0.0 and i can't figure out how to change it so i can connect to the internet.

i hope someone makes sense of what i've said and can help.

thank you in advance.

p.s. please excuse my english, and my total lack of knowledge about linux

I don't know what you mean by "i've defined a tcp/ip to improve Torrent traffic trough open ports".

1. How is windows assigned its IP address; is it static? Is it assigned by the router?
2. How does the ADSL modem connect to the ISP; does it remember your account/password and automatically connect, or does Windows have to initiate the internet connection?

1.it's static. i've defined an ip address, gateways, DNS..the lot.
2.no, windows dosen't have to do anything, as soon as i turn on the computer it's online.

the torrent thing, is (with utorrent at least) that you can open a dedicated port in the router for P2P traffic and that speeds up the connection abit.
