Kubuntu AMD64 Jaunty lock up
 

Hi,

I could use some help with this issue.

Hardware is Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard, with Athlon64 dual processor, 4 GB RAM. ATI PCIE graphics card. USB mouse and keyboard. Acer X193w monitor

Software is standard Jaunty 64 bit Kubuntu Linux installed from download via CD. ATI proprietary driver for video. All fully updated.

System suffers from erratic performance. Either mouse and keyboard input is disabled, or screen displays flashing lines (or both). Best performance was 10 days without reboot. Sometimes the display issue can be solved by restarting the X-server (Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace) other times it needs a reboot. Sometimes a flash video on FF3 causes it to initiate.

I have no error messages from lock up...

I have no idea what is causing it - or where to start. Any pointers would be most welcomed.

Yeah cooling is fine. I am afraid I don't run Windows...

I had a problem with my desktop and it would lockup and I was able to fix the problem. This was related to the ATI driver. I'm not sure if this is related to your problem but I figure I should mention it. This was in Fedora 11. What version of Kubuntu are using, 9.04 or 9.10. Kernel Version?

My problem had to with compatibility issues with the New Kernel and RandR12 support. My version of the Catalyst driver was 9.8. I was inform that they was still working on the problem.

Yeah, I suspect it is the ATI driver that is the cause of the problem... I should probably revert back to an open source driver...
