KUbuntu-9.04 - Apt-get is waiting for a restart. Please me help to find why.
Hi all - I'm using KUbuntu-9.04.
As mentioned, apt-get (I think) is waiting for a restart (the Update Notifier says so, and when I SSH into my system it tells me there also). I am assuming it is for security reasons, as it has blocked a further 4 packages from being installed at this point (relating to security by the looks, I am assuming it's part of the same thing). Can I feed apt-get some switches (or something) to make it tell me what it is that is requiring the restart? With 8 desktops and about 12 programs running at the same time, a restart is going to be a pain in the ar*e. It'd be great to find I only need to restart some services and whatnot to make it happy again. I have been looking on google for a while, and while I am sure the answer is bound to be out there, I just can't seem to find it at the moment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: I quit being lazy and restarted my machine, although would still appreciate knowing how to find the details requested above for future, please. How do I find what packages have recently been installed? And a history in general, hopefully chronological? Also, as a side note, the aforementioned packages are still blocked in Synaptic. And ideas why packages might be blocked here? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for any and all help. Looking forward to giving back, hopefully before too long. edooze. |
Sorry I have never heard of apt-get needing a restart. That doesn't make a lot of sense. Can you post the exact message that you get? What command do you give and what is the response? Are you running apt-get as root? if not that may explain the security messages.

IIRC it said something about new software. I have installed a few things. Assuming this was the reason, would this change anything? Also, when I SSH into my build, the message 'System Requires Restart' is displayed. Convenient? Undoubtedly. Still, I would like to know how to find out more. Thanks for your reply, edooze. |
Ok your package manager has installed or upgraded some packages that need your system restart to take effect. And that could be the reason behind this message.

Seriously, do you know how I can find out what packages have been updated? Can I get a history of updated packages, particularly from this last update? Thanks. |
Find it out if your log files can tell you something. But dont you even look at what updates are available ?

Log files? Of course. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look for them.
Still learning, so next time I'll be sure to check first. |
