kubuntu 64bit installation

Hello Everyone
Can any one tell me if i install Kubuntu 6.10 in safe graphics mode, will i have a working operating system with GUI at the end of the installation?.In the case of Kubuntu the KDE desktop. The reason for installing in safe graphics mode is because using the usual install option it caused a kernel panic with the error message of"kernel panic- not syncing:io-apic+timer does not work".It suggests trying the "noapic kernel parameter"which i have done.
Consequently the installer will not progress with its GUI installation, just text screen or safe graphics mode.
The machine i am trying to install onto is as follows:
AMD64 5000 dual core processor
Asus M2N32SLI motherboard
2GB 6400 ram
Western Digital 320g hard drive.
I have installed XP already as i am looking to dual boot.
I have googled for this already and have found some problems regarding version 6.10,has anybody else out there had this problem?
Any help would be gratefully received!.
The trooper.

Kubuntu installation

Hello Everyone.
It would appear that after more investigation the installer is in text mode.
A command line prompt on screen gives the LS result of Desktop.
I think i am right in saying that the GUI installer starts from a desktop?
Is it possible to start the GUI from the command line?
Any ideas???
The trooper.
