kppp problem

When I run kppp in a terminal everythings seems to work fine, modem dials up, and it says logging on to network. A few seconds later I get an error that says...
The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!
Exit Status 19(and I also get 16 sometimes)

I setup my modem, and my ISP stuff as far as I know. This is what my terminal says when I'm trying to connect...

[blobert@localhost blobert]$ kppp
Opener: received SetSecret
Opener: received OpenLock

Opener: received OpenDevice
Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon
In parent: pppd pid 1916
Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device
Kernel supports ppp alright.
It was pppd that died
pppd exited with return value 16
Sending 1912 a SIGUSR1

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using AOL?

Daggelicious 06-29-2003 10:12 PM

Nope, my ISP is peoplepc

Hmmm...
I'm not the expert on this, but I used to have the same problem (exit status 19/16 once "logging on to network"). The problem was the special logon method AOL uses, so I had to download "penggy" or "pengaol" in order to use dial-up with AOL. Worked fine after it installed.

Perhaps your ISP is the same? Try downloading the penggy, it is fast and easy to set up, so it won't hurt.

PS: if I'm right, you can click on "details" when it exits and you should get something saying possible bad password or logon.

Also, with some ISP's, you have to enter your username as "myusername@myisp.com" rather than just the username. Try doing that.

Thanks, that sounds like it would work because there is a login screen typical to aol's because I use to use it. I downloaded the file in windows, saved it to a disk.
Know, once I log into mandrake and get into a terminal is there a special location where I will need to install that file off of the disk in order for this to work right? If so, where should I install it and how would I go about doing so?

Thanks a lot for your time a patience.
