kppp account problems on RH9
 

Hello.

I've recently installed RedHat 9 on my machine. Dual boot with WinXP (NTFS) and I have several major issues with configuring it to my liking.

One problem was that I could not originally access my WinXP drive... Several searches on this forum finally got me through that one! :)

Now, the problem at hand is connecting to the internet from any account other than root.
I've got as far as creating a new account for the user but it keeps asking me for the root password... And if I give that then it connects, no problem except that the taskbar freezes.
Only the taskbar, mind you, the desktop is still active and responding.

Is this normal? :)

this is consistent with what i found with redhat9

kde was a little more stable, but i couldn't get the taskbar to stop freezing on gnome, modem lights didnt work, kde desktop froze when kppp connected
etc

Ok, I'm in the tunnel now... (you know, the one that's supposed to have a light at the end?)
Having searched a bit on google I found out that my problem is a rather well known one. Solutions, however, are eluding me... The few tips I've found hasn't worked or I've used them wrong.
One tip was to allow all users to access kppp and to do that I was supposed to log in as root and open a terminal and type in "chmod a+s /usr/bin/kppp" (without the quotes).
The result is that now I can't access ANY utility that requires the root password, while logged in as a normal user... hmmm
I then used "chmod -v a+s /usr/bin/kppp" and got this; "permissions at /usr/bin/kppp changed to 6755 (rwsr-sr-x)"

How can I reset this to the "factory settings" and any further pointers to links regarding the original problem with the need for normal users having to give root password everytime they use kppp, would be of great use.

There was another tip about setting up a modem group and then adding users allowed to access internet to that group.
I'm confused on the procedure for that. Any pointers to links with detailed information regarding this are also very welcome.
