Konqueror problem

I am new to this forum and new to Linux. When I am browsing the internet with Konqueror (SuSE 8.0) some sites will not open completely and will lock that browser screen and I have to use xkill to kill that window. Also on some sites the links don't work. When I restart with Windows ME they work fine. Any suggestions?

A lot of sites have code that makes it hard for any browser other than internet explorer to translate properly. I have have never really used konquer as a browser, so i can't help with that, but i would suggest getting another... maybe netscape or mozilla. good luck

In the software packages it lists a Galeon web browser under the GNOME package. Will it screw anything up if I install this without the rest of the Gnome software? I want to keep the KDE desktop and don't want GNOME.

There is a problem, galeon is dependent on GNOME http://galeon.sourceforge.net/suppor....php?faq=gnome

Remember that you can install GNOME, run galeon but still use KDE.

Can I install GNOME without it taking over my computer? The last time I tried that I ended up with a desk top that was half GNOME and half KDE, it was a mess. I had to do a new install to fix it and have been afraid of GNOME ever since. I sure would like to try a different web browser, Konqueror doesn't seem to work real good. For instance it has trouble opening a link in a new window.

You certainly should be able to install GNOME without it taking over your computer. I'm guessing the last time you did it your distro automatically set GNOME up as your default environment. On most distros, the critical file is /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, which tells X which programs to run on startup. If you want KDE, you should make sure a line 'startkde' (no quotes) appears at the end of this file.

Or try mozilla - galeon uses mozilla's rendering engine. Mozilla doesn't need GNOME.

Thanks llama_meme
I found mozzila on my computer and will give it a try.

Galeon rules! Actually, yes, you should be able to install Gnome, and NOT have it take over your computer (if you are using the distro listed in your distro section, Suse 8.0). Select KDE in your dropdown menu, or when it asks for your "default" WM, choose KDE, and you should have little, to NO problems.

I really like Galeon, and use it as my default browser in Flux and KDE.

Cool

Mozilla is MUCH better! Links that wouldn't open in Konqueror open with no problem in Mozilla. And the "open in new window" button actually works in Mozilla. In Konqueror it would half load the site and then hang the browser and I would have to use xkill to get rid of it. Konqueror looks nice but Mozilla works better.

I particularily like tab browsing feature introduced with mozilla 1.0 and incorporated into galeon as well, it's so convinient you don't have to have dozens of windows open, everything is on one window with tabs.
And I like galeon, I don't use GNOME, but it is there to support galeon, I also use evolution which dependent on a couple of GNOME libs, and flux rules as well.

Sweet, good setup Boris, I am with you except I go for kmail, it's my love for KDE I guess.

I haven't really used Mozilla, so this information may also apply there, but I actually really use the "buttons" in Galeon for FM and RPMFind, and Google so that's why I stick with Galeon, and the settings and such just seem to make sense to me. Obviously this isn't a browser showdown, so I will stop there.

Glad you got something working, and enjoy it as well fstreed.
