kodi nfs shares hanging

Have nfs server and central mysql database for kodi. this server is also direct booting to kodi for media center purposes. it is mapped to the nfs shares to run media, works fine. however when I try to run kodi on remote laptop, either wireless or wired when playing a movie or music it hangs for close to a minute before playing the media. nothing in the kodi log about this. not sure what else would cause it to hang. requesting guidance. all systems are ubuntu 16.04 lts with the latest ppa kodi.
