Ok...

Ok, but is this the version of knoppix that is like a DOS prompt?

there is one that resembles windows XP, and one that looks like DOS.

I have used Knoppix for more then half a decade and I never did run into a Knoppix version that looked like a DOS prompt by default. Any Linux distribution can be set to avoid X-Windows and operate only on terminals, but even so it has UNIX behind the darkness of the screen. I really have to object against associating Knoppix (or any Linux system) with DOS.

Why do you hate Ubuntu?
Why do you want Knoppix?
Knoppix and Ubuntu are from the same family, one has Gnome desktop by default, the other has KDE by default.
The beauty of Linux based operating systems....is that you can customize it. In other words, you can install KDE desktop on Ubuntu and uninstall Gnome, what you are left with is.....KNOPPIX!

Get a grip and face reality.

Do you mean that requires you to invoke '/etc/init.d/xsession start'? What's wrong with that. I need it to modprobe my opl3sax prior to running X.
