Knoppix VS Ubuntu installation CD
 

On my ms windows machine, the OS went out of order, and I wanted to salvage all my pictures, and decided to use a live CD and move some of my media files to my mp3 player... its storage is 8 gigabytes

I tried a latest Knoppix first, it did not provide me a nice GUI. Instead, it provide me with a humble looking, less than friendly, menu-based interface which I gave up on in about 3 minutes.

I was thinking for a minute, and when I tried to install Ubuntu in the past, one of the options I was provided when I ran the Ubuntu installation CD was "Try Ubuntu without installing it" and I thought it meant the Ubuntu installation CD could also be used a live CD.

And I put together an Ubuntu CD and attempted to use it as a live CD!

ah man it was beautiful. It even recognized the video card on my machine. I am never going back to knoppix. From now on, when someone ever mentions Knoppix to me, my response will be, "what is Knoppix?"

Knoppix is the reason you can use any LiveCD at all! The developer of Knoppix invented the LiveCD! Use what you like... but there would be no such thing as a LiveCD for any distro if it weren't for Knoppix. Show it a little love, or at least give a nod to the wonderful work they did to make such wonderful things possible for so many others.

Why KNOPPIX...

KNOPPIX is useful because it is not just for the latest and most powerful hardware, but will also boot that difficult, not so new system, the one where you have all the files you need, the one that Ubuntu won't boot.

It can do so because it has the most extensive set of cheatcodes that one can find.

KNOPPIX is that tool to be used if you need it. If I want to copy and move files, I prefer the intuitive layout of PCLinuxOS but have a copy of KNOPPIX 5.1.1 in reserve.

I do agree with you Robin!! I do respect people who invented the original concepts. Anyone who invents anything and finds a new direction forever has my respect. I was somewhat joking when I said "my response will be, "what is Knoppix?""

Very true. Knoppix was what started the livecd revolution. However I can see your point about using Ubuntu live cd. That again is the wonderful world of open source. The power and freedom to choose what works best for you. An example would be that I tend to use the Gentoo live net install cd.

It pretty much has every driver known to man on that cd. I have used it to recover two red hat servers at work when grub blew up for reasons unknown.

knoppix and live cds have got me out of a fix a few times, and hats off to knoppix for that, but direct boot cds are a bonus sometimes?

They're great for "rescue" operations, recovering lost files and stuff. Knoppix is not meant to be installed! People do it, and it's cool, but Knoppix is intended to be used only as a LiveCD.

I haven't used the latest version of Knoppix, but I can't imagine they moved away from a GUI interface on the LiveCD, I am guessing you selected something by accident.

I'd have used a Mint 8, Fedora or Opensuse CD or Gentoo DVD before I used Knoppix 6. Sadly Knoppix is not the king of Live CD's by a long shot anymore. The 5.3 DVD isn't bad but is getting old quickly.

Just because it's "old" doesn't mean it's bad. Debian Lenny is rock-stable, tried-and-proven, trouble free. And "old." The newer stuff is buggy, troublesome, hard to figure out. For this simple schoolkid, older is not only wiser, but more reliable.

Old usually only means lack of support for newer devices. That and the fact it isn't full of apps make it less that what I used to love about it from years ago. Hopefully someone may grab on it and make it more of the old Knoppix as it is made to re-mastered.
