knoppix question

hey i found a old knoppix cd and i found out its version 3.1 and i was wondering if the knoppix installer would work and if i update it would it be the same as the current version .. thanks

Yes it will work but most likely will break when you use apt to upgrade.Knoppix is a mix and in my experence you are better off with debian. The sarge net install is good and when you get it working you will have a nice system.

I agree with comprookie - its a nice system, and I found everything upgraded ok, until I tried to upgrade KDE and/or OO, one of which apparently confused apt (and me) to the point that I just gave up on it and went to "regular" debian.... :D [note: this was quite a while ago, newer versions may be better now]

Don't know about Knoppix, but I performed the Debian install of Kanotix and it gave me a full working Debian Sid. I have been running it since last November with no problems on both my laptop and my desktop.

My guess is the newer version of Knoppix wil work just as well, 3.1 is quite old the newest version is KNOPPIX 3.8.2. Kanotix is cool because there is a version for either a laptop or desktop. Everything worked right from the moment I booted.

The only glitch I have had was the fact that the repositories were in Germany in my source list, changed them to the US and all is well. I have a ton of programs installed so far I am using 9Gigs on a 30GB HD.

I have had one of the best working systems of my five using a hard drive install of Knoppix 3.7 The worst I have had was Debian 3.0 r4 if I remember right. I am waiting on the next version of Debian to become available on CD (slow dialups really stink) to see how well it works. Knoppix is the fastest most stable one I have had yet other than Slack 8.0 and it is the easiest to get along with for someone that is multimedia oriented, burning audio CD's for my kids etc. Good Luck with whichever choice you make.
