Did your brother install knoppix on hd or does he just boot from the liveCD? What messages do you get when you try to mount ntfs? -remember you will never be able to write or change files on the ntfs partition- |
Been a *long* time since Knoppix was a 2.4 kernel.
Knoppix has native NTFS (read) support, and also has captive support for NTFS write. This uses the real XP drivers to handle this - but requires the XP partition to be accessable. If you have a dead XP install, you are out of luck. As an aside, the captive project is no longer supported by the author - which makes using it very dodgy IMHO. |
how do I know what to write in mount -t ntfs /dev/XYZ /mnt/win -r -o umask=0222
?? how can I tell xyz? |
With root permissions try typing "mount" to see what devices are mounted. hda, sda, etc. You should see a list of the hard drives. If it shows hda as an example, you can the do an "fdisk -l /dev/hda" to list the partitions and the type that they are so you can see which you need to mount as an NTFS.

I'd just like to say that knoppix isn't actually meant to be installed. (That's what it says on their website + forum). The installer is not very mature either. I recommend you download Debian if your interested in using it from your hard drive.
