I noticed there is no forum for KNOPPIX in the distribution section of the forums so here's my opening request THAT IT BE DISCUSSED with passion and unrestrained reviews of its many joys, successes and failures of KNOPPIX!!!

KNOPPIX.... well I like the office/open office. only trouble im havin at the moment is it wont recognicse or open my modem so i cant connect to the net:( im still exploring it myself but thats what ive found so far. hope it helps

Indeed it is. Its running Mozilla perfectly as I type.

Yep, very highly recommended. Even recognises SATA drives/controllers, strange soundcards and monitors. Easy to do a hard disk install from also, if you decide you like it, giving you a semi-Debian Sid system right out of the box.

I read an article on ZDNET (Australia) where the journo reported that he thought it was the second coming of Christ as far as Linux distro was concerned.

I like it. It's easy to use, and if you decide to eventually install it to hard disk that's also fairly easy.

Ctrl+Alt+F1, then enter to bring up the prompt then type knx-hdinstall.

Knoppix was my second look at linux and i can say it is pretty impresive as it detects everything with out a hic up i didnt install to HDD but it would be good to see its speed on HDD compared to running off the cd .

I suppose a fair number of you geeks think this is easy, but for someone who is brand new to Linux . ..
feeling comfortable about following these instructions and expecting results or handling lack of results is a bit more challenging than you make it out to be.

Well when messing up with your computer, there's always a risk to damage/lose something. If the chances are minimal or not, you have to tell it to the user to avoid law suits if the system fucks up. That's why on Cold Wax boxes they tell you to NOT put it into your eyes. They also say that if your skin gets red for more then 24 hours after using Cold Wax, you should contact a doctor. The chances of it happens are minimal, but it has to be there on the box... Condoms are only effective for like 96% of the time... and it's on the box (if anybody has actually read a condom box). Chances once again are minimal, but as a costumer you have the right to know it. I could go on with a huge list but you've got the point...

I think that Klaus Knopper is doing a wonderful job with Knoppix. It detects all my hardware except for my old IDE sound card. The start-up is a pleasure to watch - it looks like a commercial product and not something made by geeks for geeks.

I have used it to rescue my son's data from a seriously screwed up Windoze box. Running it from the CD is slow and it permanently ties up your CD drive. I used: http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html to find out how to install it to my hard drive.

Unfortunately a CD is not automatically mounted when you insert it. It took a few minutes and a bit of help to do this. When you install it to a hard drive it reveals itself as Debian a fact which is effectively hidden from the user when it is run from the CD.

I personally think that Knoppix is great. It was my first launch into Linux, and I loved every minute of it. I put it into one of my computers, and with surprise nearly everything was detected! The only thing that wasn't detected was the sound card, however I didn't mind since I don't even have speakers for it so even when in Windows I can't listen to sound.
So on that computer, Knoppix did very very well - it picked everything up perfectly which I was very pleased about.

I found Knoppix great to allow me to explore Linux, and really get a feel for it before I went for something like Mandrake. One thing I wasn't too keen with Knoppix was the multiple office programs which made it a tad slow on little ram however that's very easy to get over since even Windows sometimes has problems. I fully enjoyed using Knoppix; a great distro for newbies to learn things.

Easy for you to say about the hard disk install.

I use it to .fuck. with my friends and family.... I boot to it, then tell them I reinstalled thier pc's by accident...
