Unhappy KNOPPIX and Puppy Linux won't work on my PC

My computer has an Intel processor, a 930GB SATA hard disk, Windows Vista, and an Intel ICH8R SATA RAID controller.

KNOPPIX, distros based on KNOPPIX, and Puppy Linux won't work on my PC when I boot them off LiveCDs.

With KNOPPIX and KNOPPIX based distros, it states -

'Cannot find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.'

And with Puppy Linux -

'Searching for Puppy files on computer hard disks. Cannot find file pup_400.sfs.
Dropping to limited shell.' (or something along those lines.)

I think these problems might be related to the RAID controller. Can someone please help me?

Knoppix wouldn't boot on my new computer. I think it has Intel ICH9, but it also has a sata cd drive. Entering at the boot prompt the boot code

linux all-generic-ide irqpoll

got it to boot. I don't know if your hardware is similar enough for that to work for you. Otherwise you could try some other boot codes (nodma seems to often be suggested) http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes

Thanks for the advice, Honeysuckle, but it didn't seem to work. It found the KNOPPIX filesystem on the CD, but then it came up with a long string of errors which seemed to be something about my card not supporting something. I didn't have time to read the errors properly, because the screen kept on flashing on and off. I had to boot back into Vista after that. Some of the errors mentioned bytes being lost on the CD! I think the CD's been wrecked, too. Anyway, thanks for the advice!

EDIT: The CD hasn't been wrecked, luckily!

Did you burn your cd at slow speed? If you did it at a higher speed, it might have errors.

Perhaps it is some graphics-card/monitor related problem? Maybe try VGA=normal? Otherwise you could google for people with your card having similar problems? Hopefully somebody else may have some better suggestions
