Hello and welcome to LQ.

If you must install then you'd have a number of tasks to perform. Let me ask a few questions.

Do you have knoppix installed to a hard drive? Or do you mean to install to some live media?

Would you consider using a different distro?

i have knoppix installed on a usb drive i was only curious to see how it worked
it seems pretty fast so thought i would try install kodi on it that way i can take
my usb stick with me and hopefully it will work on any laptop that i use.
but if theres a better alternative be obliged to know and thanks for your kind reply.

You must make the USB stick persistent; that is, changes are persistent. Otherwise, you're just booting into a live environment, and all changes are lost at shutdown or reboot.

This is the basic method of installing a program in Knoppix. http://knoppix.net/wiki/Deb_files_or_Debian_Packages

Something similar to the speed may be OpenElec.

Almost any of the top distro's at www.distrowatch.com will let you install kodi to it. Many easily install to a usb drive.

As noted above. There are few ways to install to a usb. One is live only. Two is live with persistence, and then there is full install.

If you write the knoppix iso file to a flash drive, boot up from the flash drive, and you install software, when you reboot, all the software you installed will be gone.

You have to boot knoppix, and install it to a flash drive--not the same flash drive you boot from. Then, after you have a real installation, you can boot from that drive and your changes will be persistent.
