Knoppix 4.0.2
 

Hi I am a complete newbie! I have a class that requires Knoppix 4.0.2. It is an introduction to Unix.

I am unsure why Knoppix 4.0.2 is required, but I have no idea where to download it from. If somebody can direct me to a site that can provide this application I would appreciate it.

The other thing is that I have always wanted to learn Unix/Linux but did not know where to begin. I know there are many knowledgeable people on this site, so if you were back in my shoes what advise would you give that would make learning the OS less frustrating?

To such a general request for information on learning linux, are you liable to get very many responses, all well grounded in the particular experience and expectation of the responder.

You might narrow your question by giving us more information about your own experience with linux and what you expect from it.

You can search the forum for this subject and read the many prior threads, naming the several guides and courses online,

burn iso (not copy)

boot cd first by changing bios

study all important commands on the cli
study Unix/Linux file system
maybe bash too
man pages describe what the commands are (very cryptic)
man 'less' commands (without quotes) will help move about the cli.

Ok, so I downloaded Ubuntu 9.0. Great OS! Looks good, and seems straight forward.

The problem that I am having is that I am running it in Virtual Box, and it will not completely mount. Every time I start my partitioned hard drive it boots from disk. I downloaded the ISO, or so I thought. I searched the Ubuntu site for this issue and I could not find anything in the user doc to help me resolve this (Ubuntu seems to be nice, but their user doc sucks!). Can anyone help me with this issue?

Forgive me if I seem awkward with this, it is because I am!

I won't give you any answers but some questions.

You ask why that Knoppix version?
I ask...is this class ...a class of microsoft users who have never installed a sytem before? Never used a live cd before? Do not know the difference between an installer distro ...a live cd distro...or a dual purpose distro?

I am guessing it is a class that may have a book based on that old version of Knoppix...but you seem not to know either?

Therefore some projects...quests...if you choose to be a prince and go forth and multiply....(joke)

Quest 1.
Boot a live cd.....do you see how linux treats your hardware?
Reboot the live cd...using toram cheatcode. Then load a data cd and see how linux treats it..then load a audio cd and see how to play it.

Quest 2.
I assume you have Virtualbox for windows.
Create a virtual hard drive. Download a installer..cd....as I do not know how much bandwith you have...I suggest you install a small distro.

Install that distro to the virtual hard drive. Compare how long it took compared to host install of windows. How many times did installer need to reboot the machine compared to windows?

Quest 3.
You like Ubuntu....shame (joking). But download distros live or otherwise that will allow you to compare...KDE, Gnome, and other minimal window managers.

Quest 4.
Assuming you have found a site to download Knoppix version x...see if you can google and find a mirror in your country or region that could be faster?
If you edit the "my LQ" link at top right hand corner of of this forum..you can show which country you are in...and somebody might be able to give better mirror directions.

BTW I use LXDE running on Debian unstable. But I am not recommending you venture into those waters.
