KNOPPIC CD wont run
Today I got the KNOPPIX 3.3 on CD. But the problem is, I put the CD in the drive and all I get is the KNOPPIX webpage were I had ordered the CD from and it has all the FAQs and info about knoppix.
Im running Windows XP right now. I am looking for like a wizard which walks me through on how to get my root password, how to connect to the internet/email and such. It does not even do that. Please help. Thanks |
i'm not sure i understand what you are doing, but it sounds like you're trying to rum knoppix under windows. won't happen.
set your bios so you can boot from cd and start your computer with the cd in the drive. intructions will follow. |
Ok, I put my KNOPPIX CD in and restarted PC. It then started to look for various settings and type of hardware I have. But, it did not ask me to set up my user/password or how to setup my internet.
Now, what do I need to type in the lower left hand corner that says (Boot:) What command should I put? I just pressed Enter and then it had to look for various drivers and such. And then after that it took me to this desktop like screen that had Knoppix 3.3 on it and a window on the lower left side had something like: Shell knoppix$knoppix$ BTW, If I get stuck on this one more time, How could I exit and go into Windows again? Because I tried to open up my CD DRive to eject the CD and It would not open so I had to shut down the PC Manually. I tried to hit ESC Key but that did not work either. Second Question - If I get somehow used to this, eventually I want to install KNoppix on my hardrive and still keep Windows XP. I have the following Local Disk ( C ) which has 33.2 GB of free space on it with NTFS. Should I let Knoppix partition the drive for free space automatically or what should I do exactly? A link to both instructions (Booting from CD and Dual installation with XP) might help me a bit. I looked for instructions for version 3.3 but it does not explain in detail. |
You didn't mention hardware or if you tried any options if you press F2 (I think, read the screen)

If you are at the desktop, I would play around with it for awhile, get used to the layout. If you want a root shell, then click on the K in the lower left corner -> Knoppix -> Root Shell
If the desktop does not show up, then in the terminal Shell knoppix$knoppix$ type startx and the desktop should load up. If you are in the desktop, to shutdown click on K -> Logout, this will shutdown the computer and spit out your cdrom. If you are stuck somewhere else, then ctrl-alt-backspace will shutdown your computer and spit out your cdrom. If you are having problems booting into the desktop, then check out this cheat sheet site: http://download.linuxtag.org/knoppix...cheatcodes.txt When you are comfortable with using knoppix and want to install on the hardrive, I would go to the knoppix web site, they will have instruction on this. The desktop you see (with icons and stuff) is the Linux desktop. Welcome to Linux.
To repeat what twilli said: To do stuff, click on the "K" icon on the lower left hand corner. This will produce a menu to let you choose what more to do. If you choose "log out knoppix" from this menu, the computer will shut down and spit out your CD so that you can boot Windows next time. |
You can use control-alt-F2 through F4 to access root virtual terminals.
Out of X, alt-F1 through alt-F4 switches between virtual terminals. Alt-F5 takes you back to the KDE desktop. |
