Kismet on SuSE 9.2?
Anyone have any luck getting Kismet to run on SuSE 9.2 with a Linksys WPC11 card?
|
What version is your card. I've just upgraded notebooks, but it worked with my v.3 card of the same make/model. Are you having trouble?
|
Yeah, originally I thought that the WPC11 used the Prism2 chipset. And that's loaded when I do lsmod. But then someone was telling me I have to compile the wlan-ng drivers. So I tried that. At first it was an uphill battle for me to get the pcmcia-cs-3.2.8 source installed. Then when I go through the make config, no errors. But when I do make install, it keeps saying all the files it's looking for aren't where they're supposed to be.
|
Do you recall the exact error message and also, did you add the card after your install?
|
I can't recall the exact message. For awhile I was getting "unresolved symbols" but those have stopped after I got the pcmcia-cs source installed. The card was added during the initial install and was auto-detected and configured by YaST.

Anyone? I'd really like to get this working but I'm completely stumped!

Hi
This might not be an exact solution, but for testing purposes, download the wardrive cd V5 here; http://www.wardrivers.be/files/software/wardrivecd/ it loads in memory only, like knoppix. Login as root, no password needed and run kismet answer the 3 questions and see if kismet works with your card, if so; check out the several conf files in /etc and see what is needed to make it run on your Suse. From what i remember in my Suse days, is that settings adapted through Yast, sometimes messes up your hand edited config files, so check them. Regards |
I'm downloading it now. Thanks for the input. Do I have to boot from this cd or just mount it, log in as root, and run kismet?
|
Hi
Just download it and burn the iso, then you can boot it, if the boot sequence is set right in your bios, so first cdrom then hdd. I've used it to see if my senao pcmcia card would work with kismet, well it runs fine, tho using other drivers then my mandrake is using. Still haven't figured out what does the trick. But then again i just had have to many things to work on at the moment and i wasn't planning on wardriving actually. I like to use it as a tool, for inst. to check wich network is messing up on the same channel and so on. Good luck |
Thanks for the input man I appreciate it! I'm going to burn the ISO now and give it a trial run. I'll write back with the results.

Hey it works! Aside from the fact it's in Dutch (i think) it worked great. I'll just have to use this CD to make note of networks before booting up into the desktop off my hdd. Thanks a lot!

Hi
Good to see you have got it wotking, at least partial. I forgot to mention that it was in Dutch, well the first welcome message and the kismet dialog. Welcome message is in /etc/issue So for others just that would like to try it; login as root ; no password required. type kismet enter. First (Dutch) dialog, choices are 1, 2 and 3 it is asking for a gps device enter 1 for serial, 2 for usb 3 fore none. Second dialog where you want your logging; 1 floppy, 2 usb drive, 3 ramdisk logfile gone after restart Third dialog, select your wifi (trial and error, but the 1st choice is normally the right one. I think if you have got a build in mini pci wifi and a pcmcia you have to try 2 and 3 then the kismet server goes up and the fun begins. You can login to another console and inspect the files you need do a lsmod to see what modules make your card tick Regards |
For me it was options 3,3,2 I believe that got it working.
