You're not the only one. Fortunately there are other options. If you liked the old Gnome, you may like MATE which is a fork of Gnome 2.

If you are now online, get all the pkgs you want through the pkg mgr.
Any DVD will be out of date almost immediately anyway...

BTW, don't install stuff unless you need(!) it - no need to clutter up your system & menus with unused stuff.
The pkg mgr will take care of dependencies for you...
