kernel upgrade problem debian

i have been running 2.2.25 debian and am attempting to upgrade to 2.4.24. when i go through the process and reboot it hangs.

i gives me the following error:

kmod : failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k
VFS : cannot open root device "302" or 03:02

Pleace append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic; VFS:unable to mount root fs on 03:02

i know 302 is hda2 and i am pretty sure it wont load the block module, however i used the same config file as i did in my older version. when i went hunting to make sure all of the modules were there i noticed the different directory structure. is that why i am having problems and how might i go about dispose of this issue?

thanks in advance

try passing root=/dev/hda2 in your lilo.conf (if that's what you're using) instead of "302".
Also, the:
kmod : failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k

line is suspicious. It means it's failing to load modules; probably your fs modules.

You need to build root filesystems directly into the kernel - make sur eyou don't have them as modules.

well i have root=/dev/hda2 in my lilo.conf. which is why i am suspicious of that.
yeah it is definitely failling to load my fs modules, ill try building them directly into the kernel and see if that works. thanks a lot.

i recompiled my kernel making sure that fs was buit in and that made the module error go away, but its still bothering me about the "3:02" error. i dont understand, everything in my lilo.conf looks fine - it says boot=/dev/hda2 and everything. oh please help.
