Kernel update outline please

Hi,

Could someone give me a Kernel update outline please so that I understand the steps involved?

I found a few articles on the Internet but for some reason you Linux folks don't like making it easy for us newbies to understand things.

Here's what I gathered. Please let me know if I'm correct or leaving something out

1. Download the kernel update package - This is one rpm package
2. Run rpm MyNewKernelUpdatePackage to install it. I understand that I can use certain switches in my command to remove the old kernel which is not the recommended way. So if I understand this correctly, this will just install the new kernel next to the old one -- it may not be right next to it though
3. There's something about SCSI systems that I'm totally confused about
4. Tell the OS loader to load the new kernel instead of the old one from this point on
5. Reboot the system

Is this correct and complete?

If you just help me with the outline at this point, I'd be grateful to you.

Once I get the outline down, I will start asking questions about what I need to do in each step.

By the way, I'm working on RedHat 9.

Here is a guide for your distro and version. It should answer all your questions.
