kernel source did not install correctly

Hi i just upgraded to kernel-2.4.20-28.9 on my Red hat system via an rpm file. I tried up2date but it crashed every time.

Becuase I upgraded I need to reinstall my NVIDIA drivers but is says that it cant find the kernel source.

I had a look in /usr/src and the old kernel source is ther but not the new kernel source.

Find the kernel source RPM file for your kernel. Since you installed it via RPM, it is very likely that it didn't install (rightfully) the new kernel source.

sorry didn't explain properly I installed the kernel source file kernel-2.4.20-28.9-src.rpm, but it seemed not to install the source files.

I finally got up2date working though and didi it that way. It is working now

A question though

Why to you have to reinstall everything after you upgrade the kernel. I have currently had to reinstall NVIDIA and my modem drivers, dont know what else wont work!

You do not have to reinstall everything when you upgrade the kernel. Only drivers.

They can be integrated into the kernel or compiled as modules. This is worked with when one is compiling their kernel from source.

Otherwise, all your applications and such should be untouched.
