Kernel source and installing madwifi, also startup screen prob

Hello there

Just starting out in the linux game, have been meaning to for a long time but AM going to stick with it now ;)

OK, first thing is pretty easy, the GRUB screen at bootup is unreadable, there are three options available, the default being win xp pro *the bottom), and then the 2 above go into redhat

im using an nvidia driver which i installed, when xserver is started a big NVIDIA comes up on the screen (although im unable to change the resolution wither ??)

is there a fix that allows me to actually read what i am accessing

2nd

im on redhat 9 running the 2.4.20-8smp kernel according to uname -r

I am trying to install the madwifi 'drivers' and i am at the point where i am meant to map the kernel from /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/kernel-2.4.20-8smp.config to

/usr/src/linux-2.4/.config

but when i go into /usr/src the are 2 folders, these being

debug
and

redhat <- there are 5 folders in here all empty

now im guessing i need to place the kernel there but im not too sure how too, any chance of someone guiding a :newbie: :)

thanks very much

#1. Depending on what package (X.org or XFree86) actual file name differs, but look for /var/log/ directory for X log. This is the log.
Following the log you will be able to find the clue to set resolution.

#2. I have never used RedHat, but did you install kernel source? rpm (or urpmi ??) will do.
