Question Kernel Source....

Alright...I'm obviously new to this whole linux thing :P

Now, I would assume "installing" the kernel source would be unzipping what I downloaded from kernel.org to /usr/src/linux-2.6.8/ and then making a link to it being /usr/src/linux.

However, this doesnt seem to be working for the NVidia drivers, and I think I'm doing something wrong...Well I'm obviously doing something wrong but hey :P.

Well, thanks for trying to help with my stupid questions

Which distro are you running? Compiling your kernel may vary depending on which distro you are using... Once you have compiled the kernel you can easily run the nvidia driver script from here:

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-6111-pkg1.run

instructions can be found here:

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...111/README.txt

OoOOooOO

So I have to compile the kernel, not just throw the source into a directory...

Now that I think about it the whole 'precompiled' thing should of given it away :P

Anyway, I'm runing the current Ubuntu...Any tips on how to compile the kernel? I may be just a but ./configure - make - make install doesn't seem to be working :P

There is a great tutorial on compiling a debian kernel at OSNews:

http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2949

Just make sure you replace your kernel version with whichever they are using in their example. Good luck!

There is another guide here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=206992

It shows the "Debian way" of upgrading a kernel.
