kernel rpm vs kernel srpms

I am getting ready to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.9-11.EL to 2.6.9-22.EL. What is the difference between source rpm and rpm?

What are the benefits of one versus the other?

The source RPM, like the name says, contains the source code for the package. You can use it to tweak the compile parameters or anything else (apply source code patches, etc.) and then use rpmbuild to build a new binary RPM. When people talk about an RPM. they usually mean a binary RPM which contains the binaries. Unless you're interested in modifying the source code or the build parameters, or need to build from source for some other reasons (e.g. to resolve dependency issues), you should probably stick with the binary RPM.

How much of the installation process will the rpm take care of? Also, will it build a /usr/src/linux-2.blah directory tree? This is really the only reason I am upgrading my kernel - I am hoping this will do that for me. Oh BTW, thanks for your help!
