Kernel recompiling

I heard people talk about "recompiling the kernel"... Someone told me (pls confirm this) that this is to make the os run at full capacity (somthing about the os being deigned for p3 and me having athlon 2000)... And if it realy optimizes linux i would like to try it, but (if you didn't notice :) ) i am a newbie so i don't have any ideeas how to do it. Can anyone tell me how or ,if it is a lot of work, redirect me to a good turorial.
PS i Have RedHat 9 (how can i tell what kernel version i have?)
Thx

I can tell u that u have the 2.4.25 kernel on ur RedHat 9 distro, but ur gonna have a helluh hard time recompiling ur kernel with RedHat 9.

k...so i can skip that for the moment...
How about editing the gui... I use Gnome? Can i change for example the redhat icon from the start menu ?:) Or the items from the rightclick menu? I searched the drive for gnome files but i didn't find something significant... Any ideeas, or am i aiming to high (i don't know what else to do...i am bored and i would hate to go back to w*****s)

I just wanted to say that I think that is the best signature:

"A computer is like an air conditioner. It stops working when u open windows."

Thats all.
