Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on md0

I downloaded MandrakeMove and burned it on a CD and booted my computer. Everything was going fine.

Then I got a fatal error.

Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on md0

What do I do now?

This is the first time I have EVER tried to boot Linux on my machine.

I rebooted to see if it would be okay the second time around but I just got the same error.

help please!

MandrakeMove is a "Live" CD distro. It is supposed to run out of the CD.
What do you mean with "Everything was going fine"? Where you trying to install it in the HD?

The only "live" Linux CD I have ever used was Knoppix, it always ran in any machine I tried.

What kind of CD-ROM are you booting from? is it a external drive? or a DVD drive?
Have you tested that CD in another PC ?

It might be possible that your download of Mandrake Move is currupt and so will not start properly.
Did you verify the MD5 checksum before burning the ISO to disc?

You can find a short HowTo and a MD5 checksum tester here:
http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/verifyiso.html

The MD5 checksum for Mandrake Move 10 is:
8f7970b4960dff5e7825deeb8a515ee3 MandrakeMove-i586.iso

I assume you downloaded the Mandrake Live distro to a Micro$oft machine. In which case, make sure you use a browser other than IE as IE is well known for corrupting downloads. Use either an Opera, Mozilla or Firefox browser for downloads. If I download from a Windows machine, I normally use Firefox and have not ever experienced file corruption.
The Firefox browser can be downloaded for free at
http://www.mozilla.org/

Hope this helps.

Terri
