kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 09:02

I have an A7V8X-X mobo
amd 2400
512M DDR Ram
MX440 8x-64TV video card
Asus 50X CD-R

I have tried everything I could think of....formatting to ext2, ext3....

....even tried Fat & Fat 32 w/installs of Win98se and 2000pro.

I can't get any OS to load on this thing.

I wanted to have a killer box for Linux and eventually run it exclusively....but I can't even install it.

kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 09:02

I'm trying to install RH 9

I got the exact same error message just today. I did something dumb, botched my system and in reinstalling Fedora Core 1 I got the exact same message.

Not to sidestep the problem, but I don't really care where it came from, I just wanted to get past it and install what I know already works. What I did was to debug the hard drive with a simple debug script. Then I tried to load Fedora and got the above mentioned error. I tried several things, and in the end simply ran format c: <enter> from a winders98 boot disk. Fedora installed perfectly afterward. It is probably related to gremlins, or the full moon or a bad breath. You want a second opinion? Okay, maybe it's gout.

Good luck!
Robert

Oh! Make sure you have a zip disk in the drive if you have a zip drive.
My installation always halts with "lost IRQ" or something helpful like that. "Lost it?!?!?! Where was the last place you SAW the IRQ? You know, there's only sixteen of them, and now you've LOST ONE?"
If you don't have a zip drive, you don't have to make sure there is a zip disk in your nonexistent zip drive.
