Kernel panic on update to ubuntu linux 2.6.31, what to do?

Update manager downloaded and installed latest kernel (Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31 -16 -generic). When I tried to restart I get the message { 1.661235}Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,38). Everything works fine on previous update. Being a newby I have no idea what to do to fix this problem. Any ideas are appreciated.

Run

Code:
sudo update-grub
and then reboot

if that doesn't work
boot into your good kernel and do

Code:
aptitude purge linux-image-2.6.31-16-generic
then reboot into your good kernel(14)
and then reinstall 16
