I have recently been attempting to install 3d acceleration for an ati card, i downloaded a guide that told me to check the following prerequisits:
enable POSIX shared memory and add tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs default 0 0 to etc/fstab (i had to change permissions to do this)
install proper drivers for AGPART using ls /lib/modules...
and modprobe to add it to the kernel (?)
its the first time i have done something like this, and when i rebooted straght away after the bootloader:
invalid compression format (err=1)
VFS cannot open root device "306" or unknown-block(3,6)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - noy synching VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,6)
Then the system hangs
I really haven't got a clue what ive done wrong or even if its related to the configuring i did, because the driver (sis.ko) i configured appeared to have loaded fine when i did lsmod. Likewise, when running mount | grem "shm" i got the message "tmpfs on /dev/shm type rmpfs (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type rmpfs (rw)"
so i think the shared memory worked ok as well.
if anybody could help me regain functionaily of my system i would really apreciate it
Ficed boot problem, 3d acceleration still not working though
Thanks for responding
when you mentioned LILO i immediately remembered i had updated the kernel and ad not ran: /sbin/lilo. I reininstalled a bootloader from the rescue installation cd and its running fine now!
However, i still cannor get the driver to work, i downloaded one from the ati site along with the XOrg configuration tool and after a lot of work it did absolutely nothing to turn on the 3d accleration (as i'm trying to get some of the 3d games working), i get a pop-up win udow stating that 3d acceleration is not configured. I want to try to configure my ati card using SAX2, but i am unsure what to do,
in the YAST control center under hardware > graphics card and monitor > options (graphics card settings)i'm presented with a list of options not highlighted which i assume are to do with the use of the graphics card.
i've deleted the driver and the fglrx tool out of rage :-) because it didn't work, if there is anything you could do to help me get the 3d acceleration started on my ati mobility radeon i would greatly appreciate it.
