Kernel panic - not syncing :


Hello,

I am a newbie to Linux. I tried installing Linux Red Hat 4 on my USB Hard drive and after installation when i trie to boot; i got the following error:

.....
Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.8 starting
mounted / proc filesystem
mounting sysfs
creating /dev
startind /udev
loading jbd.ko module
loading ext3.ko module
creating root device
mkrootdev: label / not found
mounting root filesystem
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
-

Ple suggest how to resolve this?

Need a bit more info.Please post fstab conf and bootloader conf . I will try to help you then. Booting from External drives can get a bit tricky and sometimes require custom case to case basis config.

Are you using grub on mbr of the internal hard drive?

Can you set your bios to boot from usb drive?

Have you plugged usb drive into another usb port to try?


Yes, strange questions, but its all worth trying...
