kernel panic
 

first off i dont know sh!t

so after 11 days of trying to find a clean download for zorin i finally got one i went to install it on a wd 1tb hd virgin out of the box i am using a pin drive buring the iso to cd just gave me a lot of errors and coasters
so i got to the blue screen and went to live and then i got kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root wm- block (2,0) so went to the boards and did the following tab live enter same error tab instal enter same then i tried uname-arv same uname-f same then i tried sudo f disk-1 same error rebotted and got in as i was going threw the set up of formating the disk it said to reboot i did and now iam right back where i started from any one that can help an old man out would be my hero thanks

I don't know what you've been using to burn .isos to CD, but if you haven't tried it get ImgBurn:

Okay, first of, good choice on the OS: an easy one that does'nt put you into trouble. The passage I'm somewhat worried about is:
...a ... clean download???? Because, if that's a problem, then the current set may not really be that clean....so, +1 for brianL, possibly the toaster that's on the "fritzzzz" :)

Never mind that...I guess your Grub does not find the disk, maybe these articles could shed some light...

Thank you for your reply I did try img burn using Memorex 4.7GB
And after the burn the dvd+rw would not open so that's why I would go back to power ISO I have used it many a time for games and just know it better
So as far as mint goes I did check it out and it does look promising but I still want to go with Zorin because I need to know Linux systems a little better before I move up to the big boys thanks again

It's a dvd+rw innit? Did you close the burn? Happened to me too once, all weekend (wayway back)...still have the "coasters" though ;)

Here is what I mean by a clean download from the main Zorin page and using Firefox the download took 6 hrs and the checksum did not match and then I went to p2p sites and they were full of malware or virus so I found a guide on the Zorin forms

Got no malware and no alerts from my AV checksums matched so I tried to burn it using imgburn with no luck and went back to what I know power iso at slow speed burn was good

So before I was getting using image burn error verifying data on disk sector offset
Sector 16-31 32-47 right on down the line so went to the boards and found I had a bad copy
Next error I got was not a com 32r image /casper/umlinuz
Bad copy new download next one I got was no root file system is defined
Fixed with the above download site so here is where I sit with current problems I am including screen shots of the problems and many thanks for the links I will check them out shortly

I noticed that you may have had the FREE version...this is not really the Linux Path from their part (Linux should be FREE without any barriers, I have a feeling the free users are held back somewhat)...is there a very good reason to use Zorin, other than the chosen learning path (and it is a good path, believe me) because there are distro's that are just as educational, but very blessed with a large community. Linux is not just about the OS, but also about the community around a given distro. The fact that they recommend Firefox and do not seem to have a torrent download worries me....
Of course, the choice (ultimately) is yours, thus is the magic of Linux: freedom of choice. If, however, I could tempt a shop-around from your part, perhaps some help making a selection could be in order...

Okay, let's save the environment and some money by using a USB stick to install...if that's an option for you, I'll try to guide you through the process... 66Kb/s, that's an analog modem...

By the way, if you do go ahead with Zorin, I'd gladly free up a PC here to install Zorin on, so I could guide you through the steps...

Edit - yup, it takes SIX hours :banghead: and a couple of dimes to get this thing over here...their servers are throttled...oh boy... :eek: unless they are hooked to the Net with an analog modem :D

If you're going to burn ISO image from Windows to CD or DVD, may I suggest Burnaware. I go to Distrowatch to download ISO images, it's always been full ahead speed for me there and no checksum errors. Here's the latest free Zorin; http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07709. If you want to create multiboot ISO/USB then may I suggest XBoot.

Well one of the main reasons is it acts and looks like windows xp or 7 and I am a full time grand father with 2 little one and that is what they are used to using they are 6 and 8 and I am raising them on my own so really a lot for them because that is what they know

The Firefox download was a bust that's why I went to the above mentioned download site if there is another one you would like to recommend I am all ears

So I went to your help did the quiz and got the following results
Ubuntu,Mandriva,OpenSuSE,Kubuntu,Linux Mint
and again my grand babies use it for games and school work
at this time i just got back from the store and bought some memorex 4.7gb 10 pack so i can go that way or pin drive for pin drive i use Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.2.7

i am also willing to try img burn again if i have instructions

so it is 3.47 my time and i will check back at 4pm so just let me know what you thing i should do dont know if this is any thing but i went ahead and formated the drive using windows

Okay, well, I did notice that it does take six (!!!) hours to download. Do I grab a copy and free up a PC to install it so I can follow, or will you manage...

Did you get to tinker with the Grub settings? I suspect there to be a problem...

Neh...not needed, if you've gotten to the point you reached already, the image is good, if it's a dud (bad burn, bad disk, bad whatever) you'd never get it installed anyway...but, at the price of six hours, I'd NOT throw the disk away ;)

On a lighter note, maybe setting things up as a "lookalike" could help? Dunnow, found such a page...or, how about this one? Heh, I was just foolin' around... ;) dont mind me, I'm just in weekend-mode :D

Edit - can you spare/free up an old PC? Maybe Zorin does not really "like" sharing a disk...personally, I stick with the "one OS per PC" policy, but then, there's ten PC's here, I can choose... :)

Well that look a like looks good to me but what distress would I use? And don't set up a PC just yet am still going threw
the articles and the only other thing I can think of to do is get remote assistance

Well, that's because ***soft deals with this from a different angle: a commecrial one. They push boxes, Linux moves content... :)

What distro? Hmm, depends on what the lookalikes are made for. Maybe a small into on DE's....

A DE (Desktop Environment) is a graphical shell around the system. A computer is a bit like an onion. It starts with these nuts-n-bolts, then theres a little bit called the BIOS (a starter engine say), that bit gives control to the OS proper and kicks of the OS by loading it. But, then you're left with text-only, not really nice to look at, so, you can wrap that whole thing in a graphical shell (there's a bit more going on here, but this covers the 10000 mile view kinda), and now comes the WOW-factor: Linux allows YOU to choose what the outer shell should look like, there's Gnome, XFCE, LXDE, E17 to name a few...basically, you install the one you need/like/want and then fine tune it from there on...

But, at the end of the ride, it's the kids that need to find their way around, so, let's focus on what YOU think tou need first and fully explore that side of the tenniscourt :D

Finally got it up and running my thanks to Shaman and Thor_2.0 for their help using Shamans
Handy dandy tool I was able to test the program before i tried an install using the qemu and found the problems with Thor_2.0s links I was able to find what i needed to resolve the installation issues and now it's up and running i still have a ways to go in learning how to use it but i now feel confident that i can figure it out with this boards help thanks again you are Linux Heros glad to know that there are people willing to help so i leave you with this joke
