So I "think" VFS = virtual file system,
and yeh as it says it cant mount it so what should one do as it worked fine yesterday eurgh god I sound lame

it seems like a problem with ur boot loader eg lilo or grub. Im not to familiar with gentoo, but see if u can use a boot disk to have a temoporary shell and look at ur boot loader config files eg lilo.conf look for where it says "root=" and check if that's the partition u installed to
