kernel panic


ive just tried to complie my first kernel under red hat 9

but when i try to boot to it i get a kernel panic saying i need to pass init to the kernel

how do i do this?

The reaseon of this error is probably that the kernel can't read the partition your kernel is on. Check if you have that option in the kernel. If you use initrd, it can be as module, but if there's no initrd you'd need to build in into the kernel.

Perhaps you haven't told the kernel what partition to mount as root partition?

Here's an example of a lilo.conf

# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hdb1
label = Linux
read-only
# End Linux section

Now, this assumes your kernel is /boot/vmlinuz and that it's on /dev/hdb1. You should change those two to fit your system.

using grub
so grub.conf reads

title Red Hat Linux (2.6.4)
root (hd0,5)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.4 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.6.4.img
