Kernel panic ? 11132.196873-876

Started to take plunge and install Ubuntu (Alternate CD) onto a 2 GB memory system. Windows XP Pro on primary SATA (Windows C:\ Drive).

Cleared and selected second, internal 80 GB Serial drive (E:\ in Windows) to "Partition entire Disk" via Ubuntu installer. Last I checked machine, it appeared to take a long time on "GRUB Updating" at about 66%.

Got involved with some friends over, checked on it a couple of hours later and computer is sitting with a dark black screen with one error code at the bottom, with both keybpard CAPS and SCROLL lights blinking together.

What to do? UBUNTU CD is still in machine and I am assuming it bombed out somewhere in updating for the dual Boot or maybe something after that?

Should I just eject CD, Press RESTART button, and see what happens?
Boot back into Win XP Pro, which I need?

Since you were not watching the machine, it is very difficult to diagnose what happened. In your situation, I would abort the installation and restart the installation. (Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete or some other method to restart. Starting over does not have to be "elegant" in this circumstance.) Do not worry about "losing" what you have done already since everything will be overwritten during the installation. Good luck in any case.

I pulled CD out of machine, and rebooted, there was no Linux in the Boot Up, so I am guessing that part, adding an entry by Grub Loader to MBR, never happened. Some one suggested a Mem Check, but I did that prior to installation - all OK.

So I went back into Windows, and through Admin, deleted Linuxpartition and reformatted drive back to NTFS. Might try WUBI on this drive. WUBI initiaLLY RAN ON THE PREVIOUS EXTERNAL OLDER usb DRIVE, BUT SINCE i COULDN'T BOOT FROM that (oops hit caps lock key by mistake) drive, I swapped the backup data to that drive, and cleaned the internal serial drive for the Ubuntu install.

If WUBi does not work, perhaps setting up a windows virtual machine on the internal 80 GB serial drive, and installing Linux that way and just bringing up the VM to learn and experiment with linux?
