Kernel Numbering System

I am new to this site and Linux. I am doing research for a Linux class. My question is "How are Linux Kernels numbered?"

Thank you.

Are you doing research, or just dumping the question on us? For instance, have you actually googled "how are linux kernels numbered"?

Google is your friend :) Version numbering.

"Dumping?" Quakeboy. Oh I thought this site was LinuxQuestions.org. Yes I used Google, I wanted to explore all options. I have been registered on this site for sometime and I thought I'd use it. Thanks for your assistance.

It's just site policy not to "do people's homework" for them. If part of your homework was "ask Linux users stuff" then obviously, that would be allowed. And getting an interactive perspective in addition to static research would probably be fine but you can preface things like that by saying, "I've done my research and here's what google said. What do you say?" Then we'd know you'd done your work and could just pitch in.

Anyway, welcome to LQ!

I like 'Now that we are all aware of your 'needs'. What are your 'deeds'?' to present to someone who feels that LQ is for their question knowledge base. Yes, it's LQ but not something to be used nor abused. We as helpers will aid you in your endeavors but you do have some responsibilities. Present your questions or problems so we can assist or direct you to a solution.

You can look at the next two links in hope to find or resolve your problem(s);

So, what exactly did you find out during your websearch endeavors, and what is it that you had trouble understanding?

As the others have said, we (volunteers) like answering questions. But, we don't like doing other people's work, and that work includes basic research. The people that get the most help are the ones who come here prepared, having already used google and probably the search function here, but are still unable to get an answer to their question or perhaps just don't understand the answer(s) they found.

I guess there are people who would use these sites to cheat, so maybe my question could have been worded differently. The answer needs to be in my own words so I was looking for an explanation which would help me understand what it is. What I found in my textbook Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise didn't explain the numbering system itself.

I found whowriteslinux.pdf from Google, but after I posted here I found a YouTube presentation given by Greg Kroah Hartman to Google. I was able to translate it into my own words. Thanks everyone for your replies.
